Encouraging and Practicing Teacher Leadership

Tuesday, October 25, 2016
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. CT
REL Midwest and its Educator Effectiveness Research Alliance hosted a webinar designed to share the research behind teacher leadership as well as provide examples of policies and practices that schools and districts could employ to increase and improve teacher leadership opportunities.
The event featured a presentation by REL Midwest researcher Elizabeth Barkowski, Ph.D., who shared the current research on teacher leadership. Dr. Barkowski highlighted potential gaps in the research and discussed opportunities for additional research. Then, AIR researcher Catherine Jacques provided recommendations for how schools and districts can encourage teacher leadership activities and shared state examples. Finally, Caitlin Beatson from Indiana discussed what teacher leadership programs look like in Indiana—how they work, who participates, and the state’s vision for the future.
This event is designed to address the U.S. Department of Education’s priority area of educator effectiveness.
